Tumescent Liposuction Frequently Asked Questions
Is Tumescent Liposuction safe, or are there Risks?
Tumescent Liposuction is among the safest of surgeries if it is carried out by a competent trained Plastic Surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Sadly, the technique of Tumescent Liposuction is deceptively easy in its concept and application, and thus is tried by a host of non-surgeons who may have only learned it during a weekend "training" course. Tumescent Liposuction is a procedure which is based mainly on artistic skill, but must be tempered by the ability of the surgeon to understand and manage cardiovascular aspects of the fluid load imposed by the injection of large volumes of Tumescent Solution. Tumescent Liposuction should ONLY be performed by surgeons who have peer-reviewed hospital privileges to perform the same technique in a Hospital OR, despite the fact that I, and many competent Plastic Surgeons, will usually perform Tumescent Liposuction in our Office ORs. Some risks of Tumescent Liposuction include: rare bleeding, rare infection, rare scarring, occasional asymmetry, rare injury to nerves or blood vessels, rare persistent blood or serum accumulation (except Ultrasound Lipo where it is common), occasional contour irregularities, and potential dissatisfaction, among others. Again, the best way to limit these risks is to investigate your doctors' credentials, board certifications, and hospital privileges to perform your procedure at a hospital if it is necessary to do it there.
