| Restylane™, Perlane™, and JuveDerm™ Facial Filler Injections: | ||
| Over the past several years, new injectable fillers have been approved by the FDA for use in certain areas of the face to reduce apparent age changes. Hyaluronic acid, a natural chemical found surrounding the cells throughout the tissues in many areas of the body, can now be produced outside of the body, and purified, stabilized and sterilized for injection into wrinkles and deep folds in the face. Hyaluronic acid is ideally suited for this purpose, as it is already found naturally in the body, requires no allergy testing, and generally has excellent longevity in the stabilized form, often lasting well past a year, and as long as 18 months, if properly used. Although specifically FDA-approved for use in the | nasolabial folds (those dividing the cheek area from the oral region on each side), Restylane, and JuveDerm are also useful for highlighting the fine structures of the lips, filling deeper lines on the face, and even for highlighting the cheekbones and tear trough regions below the eyelids. Risks of the procedure are low, although problems have been reported as a result of improper injection. Those risks have included lumpiness, inadequate correction, and damage to the dermis and epidermis if too tightly injected, among other potential risks. In properly experienced hands such risks are low and infrequent. Selected examples of Restylane and JuveDerm injection results are found below. | |
